The Challenge: The client was looking for a creative solution that overcame the of obstacles of the site but also took advantage of the views: An easement traverses through all the flat, buildable area. Additionally, the ‘buildable’ hillside is strewn with boulders and granite creating a separate set of challenges.
The Solution: (Embracing and Exploiting) Embracing nature by working with the granite outcroppings on the hillside, the house is divided into two, pre-fabricated ‘modules’; a Daily Living module and a Sleeping module. By Exploiting the views on the hillside, the two separate modules follow the hillside contours and step down the slope. Additionally, the client desired the home to be a Net Zero project, so the home will generate its own power through solar.
The two modules are then connected through a suspended trellis as an axis to unite the two modules together. When you first arrive on the site, the journey starts through a flat area and then compresses between two hills. It then opens up to the 200-degree views from the top of the site. Similarly, the house itself compresses and releases you to the views of the valley as you enter and move through the two modules.
