The Scott Street House offers a solution to the housing crisis that has direct application for the family living here. What conventionally is considered a teardown in a prime location, will retrofit the existing structure into a family compound minimizing its carbon footprint by adapting and reusing most of the existing structure. Tailored to the needs of the owners and their two young adult children who share a love for San Diego Bay and ocean activities, the design provides an affordable housing option in a high-cost environment.
The ground level will conserve and reuse the existing ground floor kitchen, dining, bathroom and family room converting it to an ADU with close ties to the outdoors. The loft above the garage will be converted into a studio apartment for additional accommodation. The main residence will create a new kitchen, living, and dining areas on the 3rd floor, taking advantage of the views of the Bay. The residence’s bay frontage has an eclectic garden inviting the public along a pathway known as the Bessemer Path. What was originally a 3-bedroom home will be transformed into a 3-unit family compound where multiple generations can coexist, all while maintaining privacy and prioritizing sustainability.
