Set on top of a sandstone bluff in Del Mar Heights, the Stein Residence, an existing multi-angled walled building, was a challenge because of its a shared driveway, close proximity to adjacent neighbors, and limited building area and height. The remodel goals were to capitalize the expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and add more livable space.
These goals were met by expanding the main floor living area and extending the outdoor deck with a retractable wall of glass separating the two spaces.
Excavating below the existing house, a lower level was added to include a wine cellar, a guest room, office, and additional restroom.
The exterior remodel includes extended copper eaves out towards the bluffs, locating windows to frame views, and creating outdoor living spaces with different characters.
