Mission Skills Training Center in early feasibility had assumed a single-story development for the training center. An initial charrette was conducted with user groups, producing a series of design options. A two-story solution was identified as being preferred as it proved more cost effective and decreased the impact on existing site facilities and infrastructure.

This new training facility that includes 25,000 SF of interior space and 12,000 SF of covered space is integrated with tenant improvements in adjacent existing structures for a total of 47,000 SF.

Perched on the crest of a mesa overlooking Mission Valley in San Diego, this new training facility finds its forms in the surrounding context of electrical substations, towers and high-voltage power lines. This context combined with a need for economy evolved into an expressive industrial aesthetic.

Natural materials and colors are intrinsic to the design; to both reflect the hues and textures of the physical context, and to ensure a minimization of on-going and cyclic maintenance. The outcome is a solution tailored specifically to short and medium-term needs, but respectful of long-term corporate demands for flexibility.
